How to Have the Assurance of Your Salvation

Do you know for certain that you are saved? Can you say with confidence, "I know that I know that I know I belong to Jesus"? Many believers wrestle with doubt, uncertainty, or fear regarding their salvation. But it doesn’t have to be that way. The Bible teaches that we can have blessed assurance in our faith journey.
As we continue our series on “Staying the Course,” let's dive into 2 Peter 1:5-11 to discover how we can experience the assurance of our salvation. In this passage, Peter outlines four ways to live with a guaranteed, assured faith.

1. Tenaciously Work to Mature Your Faith in Christ

Peter begins by saying, “Applying all diligence” (2 Peter 1:5). In other words, be eager and make every effort to grow in your faith. Becoming a Christian isn’t the end; it’s just the beginning. Genuine faith is accompanied by a lifelong journey of spiritual growth.
Are you taking active steps to grow in your faith? This means pursuing a relationship with Christ, reading His Word, praying, and allowing the Holy Spirit to work in every area of your life. It’s about continually saying “yes” to Jesus, even when it’s challenging.
Ask yourself: Am I diligently working to mature in my faith, or am I becoming stagnant? Assurance comes as we keep taking steps of faith, trusting God more each day.

2. Pursue a Variety of Christlike Virtues

Peter then lists seven virtues that should be evident in the life of a believer: moral excellence, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love (2 Peter 1:5-7). These qualities are not optional; they are essential for growing in Christ.
This isn't about picking just one virtue to work on; it's about letting them all develop as you walk with Christ. When you see these qualities growing in your life, you’ll have greater assurance that God is at work in you.
Ask yourself: Are these Christlike virtues evident and increasing in my life? As you grow in these virtues, you’ll gain confidence in your salvation because you’ll see God’s hand shaping and molding you to be more like Him.

3. Keep Growing and Never Forget That You Are Forgiven

Peter warns that those who lack these qualities are “blind or short-sighted, having forgotten his purification from his former sins” (2 Peter 1:9). Assurance comes when we remember that we’ve been forgiven by the blood of Jesus.
Do you often reflect on the fact that you’ve been forgiven of all your sins—past, present, and future? Never forget the grace that saved you. Keep growing in your faith, and let the truth of your forgiveness be the fuel that drives you forward. When you understand the depth of God’s mercy, you can’t help but grow in assurance.

4. Confirm His Calling and Choosing of You

Peter encourages us to “be all the more diligent to make certain about His calling and choosing you” (2 Peter 1:10). Salvation is entirely the work of God. He’s the one who calls, saves, and sustains us. When we realize that our salvation isn’t based on our works but on His grace, we can rest assured.
Are you confident in God’s calling and choosing of you? Reflect on the fact that He chose you before the foundation of the world. If you belong to Christ, no one can snatch you from His hand.

Living with Blessed Assurance

When you diligently grow in your faith, pursue Christlike virtues, remember your forgiveness, and confirm His calling, you’ll live with the assurance that you are saved. This assurance isn’t just a theological concept; it’s a life-changing reality. It changes the way you approach your relationships, your work, your family, and every decision you make.
You can have this blessed assurance today. As you walk with Christ, you will be abundantly supplied with the entrance into His eternal kingdom (2 Peter 1:11).

Let this be your testimony: I know that I know that I know—I belong to Jesus.
