Every year on the Fourth of July, Americans gather with family and friends to celebrate the freedoms we enjoy as a nation. We watch fireworks fill the night sky, wave the American flag with gratitude, and remember the brave men and women who willingly sacrificed their lives so others could live in liberty.
As Christians, it is right to give thanks.
The United States is not a perfect nation, but it has been abundantly blessed by God. We have enjoyed freedoms that countless people around the world long for—the freedom to worship openly, proclaim the gospel boldly, raise our families according to biblical truth, and gather without fear. These blessings should never be taken for granted.
Yet as grateful as we should be for our national freedoms, there is a far greater freedom that every person desperately needs.
Scripture declares, “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free” (Galatians 5:1).
The freedom Jesus purchased has nothing to do with political parties, government policies, or national borders. It is freedom from the power of sin, freedom from condemnation, freedom from the fear of death, and freedom to know and enjoy God forever.
No nation can offer that.
No president can guarantee it.
No law can secure it.
Only Jesus Christ can.
Here is the tragedy: millions of people will celebrate freedom this Fourth of July while remaining enslaved to sin. They may be free to say what they want, go where they want, and pursue whatever they desire, yet they remain separated from God, living under His judgment without even realizing it.
That should break our hearts.
The greatest danger facing America is not merely political division, economic uncertainty, or moral decline. The greatest danger is that people are living apart from Christ while believing they are just fine. Eternal souls are at stake.
The cross reminds us that our sin was so serious the Son of God had to die to pay its penalty. The empty tomb reminds us that Jesus conquered sin and death so that everyone who repents and believes in Him can be truly free.
But make no mistake, Jesus did not die so we could simply add Christianity to an otherwise comfortable life. He calls us to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily, and follow Him. Biblical freedom is not the right to do whatever we want. It is the power to joyfully obey the One who gave everything to save us.
This is why the church cannot remain silent.
Now is not the time for passive Christianity. Now is not the time to soften God’s truth to gain the approval of culture. Now is the time for followers of Jesus to lovingly proclaim the gospel with courage, conviction, and compassion. Our neighbors do not merely need a better country, they need a Savior.
As you gather with family and friends this Independence Day, enjoy the celebration. Thank God for the freedoms we have been given. Pray for our nation. Pray for our leaders. Pray for revival.
But don’t stop there.
Ask yourself whether you are truly free.
Have you surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, or are you still living in bondage to sin? Have you trusted Him alone for salvation, or are you hoping your morality, your church attendance, or your good intentions will somehow be enough?
One day, every firework will fade. Every earthly kingdom will pass away. Every one of us will stand before the King of Kings.
The question that matters most is not whether you lived in a free country.
The question is whether the Son has set you free.
Today is the day to repent. Today is the day to believe. Today is the day to receive the freedom that only Jesus Christ can give.
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” — John 8:36
